EMU clinches MAC tourney berth with win

AKRON, Ohio – Despite cool temperatures and a steady rain, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team was able to score three goals en route to a 3-0 Mid-American Conference victory over the University of Akron Zips at Lee R. Jackson Field, Friday, Oct. 24. With the win, the Eagles have clinched a postseason berth for the second consecutive season.

EMU moves to 10-4-4 (5-2-2 MAC) with the win, while Akron falls to 7-8-1 (2-6-1 MAC). The 10th win of the season marks the first time since 2004 that the Eagles have reached double-digit wins in a season.

Sophomore Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) started the scoring for the Eagles, scoring off her own corner kick when it was deflected off an Akron defender, putting the visitors on top 1-0 in the ninth minute of the contest.

The Eagles were able to tack on another goal right before halftime when two freshmen hooked up for the score. Julie Kaim (Palos Hills, Ill.-AA Stagg) scored the first goal of her career from about six yards out off a Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-Grosse Pointe North) pass, allowing EMU to hit the break with a 2-0 advantage.

Following halftime, the Eagles continued their strong offensive play, finding the back of the net less than eight minutes into the second half. Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) scored her second goal of the season with Vanessa Atanasoski (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Stevenson) and Ashley Rodrigues (Pickering, Ont.-St. Mary’s Catholic) picking up assists. Neither team was able to score after that, giving the Eagles a 3-0 win.

Sophomore keeper Mona Budani (Whitby, Ont.-Sinclair Secondary) got the nod in goal for EMU, picking up her third shutout in MAC play. Budani made five saves in the backstop, earning the shutout and preserving the victory for the Green and White.

EMU stays on the road for a Sunday, Oct. 26 match at Ohio University. The Eagles and Bobcats are set for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Chessa Field.
