BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Following an extensive national search to find its next head volleyball coach, Montana State didn’t have to look too far to fill its vacancy.

Sara Schaub, head coach at NCAA Division II MSU Billings, was named the eighth head coach at Montana State University-Bozeman, announced MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields.

“We had an outstanding list of candidates, each bringing something different to the program and University,” Fields said. “Sara emerged as someone we felt was the right fit for Montana State University.”

Schaub recently completed her first season at MSU Billings, guiding the Yellowjackets to an 18-10 overall mark and a fifth place finish in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

This fall, MSU Billings ranked as high as ninth in the NCAA Division II Pacific Region. In addition, Schaub led two players to GNAC all-league accolades and three student-athletes to GNAC all-academic honors.

“Sara brings great energy and passion to the program,” Fields said. “Her combination of athletic and academic success makes her the right fit for our program. During the interview process, Sara clearly communicated to all Bobcat constituencies, her commitment to keeping academics a high priority and teaching the student-athletes how to lead balanced lives.”

Prior to her stint in Billings, Schaub served five seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University.

“I’m tremendously excited about the opportunity to be coaching at Montana State,” Schaub said. “I would like to thank Peter Fields, Camie Bechtold and the search committee for their efforts during the search.

“My first priorities are getting to know the student-athletes and building relationships on campus and in the Gallatin Valley,” Schaub added.

During her tenure in Ypsilanti, she helped EMU to a 99-56 overall record, including a 2005 Mid-American Conference West Division title- a first in the school’s history. Eastern Michigan also posted three 20-win seasons and was ranked 11th and 17th in the nation in kills and digs per game, respectively.

At Eastern Michigan, Schaub directed and managed all recruiting activities; monitored student-athlete academic success; planned game and practice strategies; coordinated team travel; managed all equipment needs; and served as facilities liaison. Schaub also served as Eastern Michigan’s head camp administrator and court coach for five years.

Schaub played collegiately at EMU, where she was a four-year starter and two-year captain. She was the first player in Mid-American Conference history to average over 4.00 kills and 4.00 digs in the same season. A native of Huron, Ohio, she finished her career second on EMU’s all-time kill chart (1,405) and third in digs (1,388).

Schaub is a 2001 graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration/accounting information systems. She also holds a master’s of science degree in accounting, graduating magna cum laude from EMU in 2002.

She will begin her duties on Monday.
