This marks Schmitt's first career MAC weekly award

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Redshirt sophomore Andy Schmitt (St. John’s, Mich.-St. John’s)  was named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Sept. 23. This marks Schmitt's first career MAC weekly award.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.

Schmitt, who holds a 3.35 GPA in secondary education/mathemathics, turned in a complete game as the starting quarterback in a 38-15 win over Howard University, Sept. 22, at Rynearson Stadium. He completed 14-of-21 passes for 214 yards with no interceptions and threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers. The four touchdown passes thrown ties for second in EMU history for a single game.

The EMU football team continue non-conference action Saturday, Sept. 29, in Nashville, Tenn. against Vanderbilt University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST and can be heard on WEMU 89.1 FM.
