ALBANY, N.Y. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team struggled against the University of Albany, dropping a 3-1 (11-30, 30-27, 18-30, 17-30) decision Friday afternoon in the opener of the UAlbany Classic here at University Gymnasium. The Green and White battled inconsistent hitting all day long, as the Great Danes out hit the Eagles .293 to .060.
With the victory Albany evens its record at 5-5 while EMU falls to 7-5 on the year.
Once again senior Becky Reenders led the Eagles with 12 kills to go along with two block solos and three digs. Senior Abby Reenders added a double-double with 10 kills and 20 digs, while sophomore libero Kim Jarzynka collected a match-high 21 digs. Senior Kate Sulewski chipped in 38 assists and 13 eight digs for EMU.
Kamisha Kellam paced the Danes' attack with 18 kills and Katie Eckhardt tallied five total blocks.
Albany dominated the first game, as the Great Danes used a 16-9 run to open the match. EMU was never able to get on track as UA rolled to the 30-11 decision. In the second game, EMU jumped on the board first and built an early lead before expanding the margin to as many as 12 points. Games three and four once again were dominated by the home team as Albany cruised to 30-18 and 30-17 en route to the match victory.
The Eagles looks to regain its winning ways Saturday, Sept. 15, squaring off with Brown University and 10 a.m. and Northeastern University at 1p.m. in the finale of the UAlbany Classic.
