Running back Anthony Sherrell of the Detroit Lions, cornerback Gabe Franklin of the San Diego Chargers, and kicker Rhys Lloyd of the Frankfurt Galaxy are the NFL Europa League Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the second week of the 2007 season (April 20-22), the league announced today.
Sherrell, who is the NFL Europa leader in scrimmage yards this season with 229, amassed 102 multi-purpose yards in Frankfurt’s 18-13 win over the Cologne Centurions. He rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries and caught six passes for 45 yards. An Eastern Michigan product, Sherrell currently ranks second in the league in rushing yards (167), trailing only Kansas City-allocated running back Derrick Ross (168) of Cologne.
Franklin recorded nine tackles, one sack, one quarterback pressure and forced a fumble for Cologne. He also registered two interceptions and four passes defensed.
“Hopefully, I’ll have many more games like that,” Franklin said. “A lot of it came down to good play-calling and me being in the right spot at the right time. They’re a high-powered offense but we pretty much shut them down.”
Lloyd, a British kicker who starred at the University of Minnesota, was named Special Teams Player of the Week after converting a league record-tying 56-yard field goal for the Galaxy in its win. The kick – worth four points under NFL Europa rules – tied the mark set by Rhein Fire kicker Danny Kight during a game against the Barcelona Dragons on May 6, 2000. Lloyd added two conversions to end the game with six points.
“The 56-yard attempt is routine,” said Lloyd, who leads NFL Europa in scoring with 18 points. “Whether I kick a 30-yarder or one from 60, it’s the same. I had a great snap, a great hold and a great kick. It took 11 guys.”
“I feel we have a great kicker,” said Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES. “Rhys has a strong leg and you can see that on his kickoffs. Being able to make a four-point field goal is a huge bonus for our offense.”
German defensive end BEN ISHOLA, who played three seasons of college football at Indiana, was named National Player of the Week. He recorded four tackles, one sack for 10 yards, one quarterback hurry and two special teams tackles in the Hamburg Sea Devils’ 16-7 victory over the Berlin Thunder.
