CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University athletics program set a Mid-American Conference record with eight team championships in men’s and women’s competition during the 2006-07 season.
Eastern opened the 2006-07 athletic year with a MAC championship in men’s cross country. The Eagles quickly added to that total in the winter with titles in men’s and women’s swimming, men’s indoor track and women’s gymnastics. The spring season brought EMU league crowns in men’s golf, men’s outdoor track and women’s softball.
That total of eight MAC championships is not only a school record, with the previous best being five in 1997-98, 1990-91 and 1987-88, but also snaps the MAC record of six, held jointly by Central Michigan (2003-04) and Western Michigan (1984-85).
That success led the Eagles to a third-place finish in the 2006-07 Reese Trophy competition for men’s teams and a seventh-place in the women’s all-sports race, the Jacoby Trophy. The EMU men scored the most points, 73, of any school in 2006-07 while the women’s team was just .44 points out of a runner-up finish in the Jacoby Trophy race.
When compiling Reese Trophy points, all MAC-sponsored sports receive points. An institution may either count indoor track and or outdoor track and field, but not both. The sum of those total points is then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school, resulting in an average point total. The school with the highest averaged will be awarded the trophy.
The Reese Trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese, the first-ever MAC Commissioner who served the league from its inception in 1946 until retiring in 1964.
The Jacoby Trophy named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby who served the league from 1971-82. Jacoby is credited with incorporating women’s athletics into the league’s structure.
