Late Eagle rally in the ninth falls shot

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Down 8-1 in the top in the ninth inning to Arizona, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team rallied for six runs to pull within one run but it was not enough as the Wildcats defeated the Eagles 8-7 Saturday afternoon here at Kindall Field.

With the victory Arizona moves to 13-4 on the season while Eastern Michigan drops its seventh consecutive game falling to 1-8 on the year.

Arizona jumped to a 6-0 lead on 10 hits through the bottom of the sixth inning. EMU got on the board in the top of the seventh inning as senior Derek Lehrman hit a RBI single to score freshman Robert Wendzicki making the score 6-1. However, Arizona got runners in scoring position due to a walk, hit batsman and a balk from EMU pitching. Arizona’s T.J. Steel made the Eagles pay with a double to drive in two runs increasing the Wildcat lead to 8-1.

In the top of the ninth, Eastern started its rally with back-to-back doubles by sophomore Aaron Powell and junior Jeff Hehr to plate a run. The Eagles caught a break as Josh Ivan reached on a throwing error by the third baseman which would have been the second out of the inning. Andrew Marshall struck out for the second out but senior Patrick Dean and sophomore Kyle Rhoad capitalized on the Wildcat error to drive in another run to pull EMU closer at 8-3. Wendzicki then hit another single to drive in two runs and junior Jeff Davis followed with a clutch triple to drive in another two runs to pull the green and white within one, 8-7. On his second trip to the plate in the inning, Powell struck out looking to end the game.

The Eagles were led by Powell who went 4-for-6 with a run scored. Lehrman went 3-for-5 with a RBI while Wendzicki went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, junior George Biddle (0-2) had a rough outing allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. Brad Mills (4-1) picked up the win for Arizona allowing only one run on five hits with an impressive 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

The series finale between EMU and Arizona is Sunday, March at 3 p.m. EST.
