EMU Tops Clarion 20-15

CLARION, Penn. —The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team rallied from a 12-0 defecit after the first three matches to defeat Clarion University 20-15, here at W.S. Tippin Gym. The match was the first of three to be contested this weekend for the EMU.

With the win the Eagles improve to 5-6, 1-3 MAC, while Clarion falls to 7-11 on the year.

EMU forfeited the 125 lbs. match, giving Clarion the early 6-0 advantage. In the 133 lbs. match, Sal Lascari, a former wrestler under EMU head coach Derek DelPorto while at Slippery Rock, won a 9-3 decision over Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh). CU would also take the 141 lbs. contest with a 9-2 decision, extending their lead to 12-0.

Senior Jermain Thompson (Akron, Ohio-Kenmore) started an Eagle rally with a 5-4 decision over Hadley Harrison in the 149 lbs match. EMU would go on to take the next three matches before Tony Lyssiotis (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) earned a 10-2 major decision over Dixon Jordan in the 197 lbs. contest to seal the victory.

In the 157 lbs. match, Cory Mancuso (Brockway, Penn.-Brockway Area) posted a 13-3 major decision over Lucas Christopher, which was followed by a 8-3 decision in the 165 lbs. match for Nick Conklin (Milton, Wisc.-Milton), and a 5-4 decision for Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) in the 174 lbs. match. In the 184 lbs. match, John McClure (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) would need overtime to post a 4-2 decision over Scott Joseph.

"It's tough to give up six right off the bat and then find yourself down 12-0 after three matches, but our guys rallied after Jermain's decision. Conklin keeps doing his thing and Mancuso has been able to set the tempo early in his last few matches", said Delporto.

EMU will continue its road trip in Pennsylvania as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne University and Wagner College tomorrow, Feb. 10.
