Second half comeback not enough to hold off Bobcats
Box score.
YPSILANTI, Mich. — Despite overcoming a double-digit second half deficit and briefly leading with less than eight minutes to play, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team could not overcome a poor shooting day from the field and fell, 70-62, to the Ohio University Bobcats in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game here Saturday in the Convocation Center.
Despite scoring 28 points off 19 Ohio turnovers the Eagles shot a disappointing 22-of-58 (37.9 percent) from the field, including 8-of-30 (26.7 percent) in the first half. The Bobcats connected on 13 of their 26 first half shots (50 percent) and finished with a 20-for-41 (48.8 percent) shooting day. In addition to their struggles from the field the Eagles (12-10, 7-4 MAC) were outworked on the glass as Ohio (13-10, 6-5 MAC) held a 39 to 23 advantage in the rebound department.
The Eagles had three starters reach double figures. Senior guard Patrice McKinney (Lansing, Mich-Everett) led the way with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. McKinney also led the team in assists with four. Other main contributors were Sarah VanMetre (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville) with 13 points and five rebounds and Kendra Gallert (Lowell, Mich-Lowell) who added 11 points.
Ohio was led by junior forward Lauren Kohn who connected on 7-of-11 shots from the field and hit 2-of-3 from behind the arc on her way to a game-high 24 points. The Bobcats had three other starters reach double figures including Quintana Ward who scored 15 points and had a team high five assists. Rachel Frederick and Jennifer Bushby each added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats.
The Eagles started the second-half hot on a 7-2 run before a Kohn three gave the Bobcats a seven-point lead, 38-31. A three-point shot by Ward and a Kohn jumper built the Bobcat advantage to double digits before a three by Canea Williams (Mansfield, Ohio-Senior) cut the lead to seven.
A 12-2 run capped off by a VanMetre three gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, 48-47, with 9:17 to play in the game. After the Bobcats tied the game at 50-50, a layup by Emily Hanley (Bloomington, Ind.-Normal Community) and the resulting free throw gave the Eagles their largest lead of the night, 53-50. A 20-11 run over the last seven minutes of the game allowed the Bobcats to hold off the Eagles for the victory.
A quick 9-2 run put Ohio up 12-5 early. A Gallert three cut the lead to four with 15:38 to play in the first half. A 7-0 Ohio run then gave the Bobcats a double-digit lead, 21-10. Both teams struggled offensively over the next five minutes until Bushby and Gallert exchanged three-point shots. Bushby’s third three of the half gave the Bobcats a 31-17 lead with 3:07 to play in the half. The Eagles finished the half on a 7-2 run and headed to the lockerroom trailing by nine, 33-24.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, Feb. 14, for a MAC West Division game at Northern Illinois. Tip-off time is 8:05 p.m. EST.
