EMU Drops 76-65 Decision at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Notre Dame squad and dropped a 76-65 non-conference decision here Saturday night in the Joyce Center.
Notre Dame built up a 43-32 halftime lead and led by 22, 66-44, with 7:17 left in the game before the Eagles fought back to pull within 12, 74-62, with 2:30 remaining in the game. Notre Dame would hold off the Eagles the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
The Fighting Irish, now 5-2 on the season, ran their home-court winning streak to 24 straight games in the win. Notre Dame connected on 27-of-48 field goal attempts for 56.3 percent and hit 10-of-16 three-point field goals for 62.5 percent. The Eagles, now 3-4 on the year, made 25-of-52 field goals (48.1 percent) and made 7-of-15 triples (46.7). Notre Dame won the battle of the boards, 28-26.
Sophomore center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) led the Eagles with a game-high 26 points while Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) added 14.
Notre Dame came out of the blocks with a quick 8-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game. The Fighting Irish increased their lead to 10, 19-9, at the 14:11 mark, but the Eagles settled down and methodically rallied to take a one-point lead, 21-20, on a Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich.-Murray Wright) layup at the 10:01 mark.
The Irish came back from that one-point deficit to build a 40-32 lead with 2:31 left, and the home team finished the half with a big three from the right corner by Ryan Ayers to take a 43-32 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Dobbins was a terror on the inside in the first 20 minutes for the Eagles, closing out the half with 14 points, connecting on 7-of-9 field-goal attempts. Kyle McAlarney paced Notre Dame with 11 first-half points.
Notre Dame came out for the second half on fire, running their advantage to 17, 51-34, with 16:05 left in the game. The Eagles hit a dry spell for the next seven minutes and managed just 10 points while the Irish were scoring 12 of their own to build their advantage to 19,
63-44, with 9:35 remaining.
The Eagles stayed tough, however, and cut the advantage to 12 late in the game, but it was too little too late for the visitors, with Notre Dame holding on for the 11-point win.
