Kate Sulewski Named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week

Senior setter earns first career conference scholar athlete award
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior setter Kate Sulewski (Ottawa Lake, Mich.-Bedford) was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Oct. 7. This marks Sulewski’s first career scholar athlete award.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
Sulewski, who holds a 3.35 GPA as an accounting major, led the Eagles with 104 set assists, 30 digs, five total blocks and five kills as the EMU volleyball team completed a 1-1 week with a five-set victory over MAC West Division co-leader Central Michigan and a solid performance against No. 21 Ohio.
In eight games played, she averaged 13.00 assists, 0.62 kills, 3.75 digs, 1.19 points and 0.62 blocks. Sulewski turned in the best match of the weekend against CMU, posting 62 set assists, 22 digs and five kills during the victory. Against nationally ranked Ohio, she notched four block assists, 42 assists and eight digs.
Sulewski continues to set the table for the EMU volleyball team’s success. She has recorded 19 matches this season with 30-or-more assists. For her career she has 105 of her 108 career matches with 30+ set assists, including 16 matches with 60-or-more assists. Already the EMU career leader in set assists, Sulewski ranks sixth in Mid-American Conference history with 4,883. Ball State’s Emily Sallee is the conference all-time record holder with 6,408 set assists between 1997 and 2000.
The Green and White will travel to Miami next Friday, Oct. 12, for a 7 p.m. match and then off to Bowling Green Saturday, Oct. 13, for a 3 p.m. match.
