Women's Tennis Starts Season Strong

Eagles Open Up Season with a Strong Showing at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team had a strong showing this past weekend at the La Salle Bank Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State. The Eagles posted a 13-6 record in their first competition of the year against Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois State, Ball State, Morehead, and St. Louis University.

The Eagles opened up round one of the singles matches taking three of five from Indiana University. Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) and Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) posted victories in straight sets, while Cathrina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) posted a victory in three sets, going 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

In the second round of singles the Eagles went a perfect 7-0 with five wins coming against Morehead and two against Detroit Mercy. Frankowski, Parfenyuk, Bestehorn, Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec/Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval), and Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Onterio-Canada/Markvile Secondary School) all posted straight set victories over Morehead. Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic/Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micati (Rio de Janerio, Brazil/Cejo Terejopolis RJ) both won in straight sets over Amy Inman and Ingrid Stensvaag of Detroit.

In doubles competiton, the team of Frankowski/Parfenyuk defeated Christine Bader and Sarah Andrews of Michigan State 8-3. The teams of Krishnan/Syrova and Fernandez/Micati were both defeated 9-7.

Eastern will travel next to Toledo, Ohio Sunday, Oct. 8, for the Rocket Invitational.
