EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team ended a three-match losing skid with a sweep of the University of Miami (Fla.), 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-24), here Friday afternoon in the second game of the Spartan Invitational at Jenison Field House on the campus of Michigan State University. With the victory the Eagles improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Hurricanes drop to 2-2.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team ended a three-match losing skid with a sweep of the University of Miami (Fla.), 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-24), here Friday afternoon in the second game of the Spartan Invitational at Jenison Field House on the campus of Michigan State University. With the victory the Eagles improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Hurricanes drop to 2-2.
For the match, EMU was paced by Lindsay Piccolini with 13 kills and six block (3 solo, 3 assist) for a total of 19.5 points. Junior setter Kate Sulewski recorded 33 assists, while junior Abby Reenders posted 10 digs.
The two squads battled back and fourth until EMU went on a 14-7 run to take an 18-10 lead. The Eagles advantage grew to as many as 11, as EMU took the first set by a score of 30-19. Piccolini chalked up five kills and two blocks in the game, while sophomore Jill Wolsiansky added five kills.
In the second game Miami jumped on the board, taking an early 6-2 lead, but Eastern stormed back with a 14-2 run of its own to regain control at 16-12. The Hurricanes would challenge but EMU held off the attack to take the game by a score of 30-25 and post a 2-0 mark heading in to the intermission.
Junior Becky Reenders led the way with a game-best five kills, while Piccolini tallied four kills.

In the finale, the Green and White started strong out of the gate taking a 10-4 lead and saw its advantage grow on the strength of 10-4 run. UM was never able to get any closer than five, as EMU took the game and the match.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow, Sept. 2, to wrap of the Spartan Invitation with a 4 p.m. match against Big East Conference foe Villanova University.
