Eagles to play Michigan,Detroit,Oakland, Marquette, and Tulsa in non-league tilts
Complete Schedule.
YPSILANTI, Mich.—The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team will play instate rivals Michigan, Detroit and Oakland, will make a trip to California for a tournament, and will play 16 Mid-American Conference games in a 2006-07 schedule announced today.
"I think our 2006-07 schedule is a very competitive one and will be a real challenge for us," second-year head coach Charles E. Ramsey said. "We will play Michigan, Central Connecticut and Davidson at the John Thompson Challenge in Ann Arbor, travel to Cal Berkeley for the Golden Bear Classic, and we have Detroit, Oakland, Marquette and Tulsa as part of the non-league schedule. We will also host a Bracket Buster Game in February. Our team will be very young this season but the only way to improve a basketball program is to play a competitive schedule and we will be prepared for that upcoming challenge."
The Eagles open the 2006-07 season at the three-day John Thompson Classic in Ann Arbor, Nov. 10-12. Eastern starts the three-day set with a game versus Davidson, Nov. 10, followed by a Nov. 11 game against Central Connecticut State, and closing with a matchup against Washtenaw County rival Michigan, Nov. 12.
Following that opening tourney, the Eagles hit the road for non-league battles at Marquette, Nov. 18, and Detroit, Nov. 29, before returning home for a Dec. 5 game against Oakland. Eastern will then head to Berkeley, Calif. to participate in the Golden Bear Classic. The other three teams at Cal Berkeley are host school California, coached by former EMU head man Ben Braun, San Diego, and Chicago State. The pairings for that tournament have not been released.
From California the Eagles return to Ypsilanti for six home games in a seven-game stretch, four of them non-league battles. Northern Colorado invades the Convocation Center for a Dec. 21 game followed by Eastern Illinois, Dec. 28, IPFW, Dec. 31, and North Dakota State, Jan. 6. Eastern will travel to Tulsa for a Dec. 23 game.
EMU then opens the MAC schedule with a Jan. 6 home game against Central Michigan and a Jan. 9 home tilt against Northern Illinois. Rounding out the rest of the league schedule the Eagles will host Toledo, Buffalo, Akron, Miami, Western Michigan, and Ball State while traveling to Ball State, Western Michigan, Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green, Toledo, Central Michigan and Western Michigan. The Bracket Buster Game, a matchup that will be announced in February, is scheduled for Feb. 22.
For the first time since the 1991-92 season the Eagles will play just 16 MAC games after competing in 18 league tilts for the past 14 seasons. And for the first time ever, all the league schools will compete in the MAC Tournament at one site, Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, March 10-12. For the past 28 years the first round of the MAC Tournament was played at campus sites. When the tournament was first started, in 1979-80, not all of the teams qualified for post-season play.
