EL PASO, Texas – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was swept by Sacramento State, 3-0 (30-19, 30-23, 30-24), in the finale of the 2006 Sun Bowl Volleyball Invitational here at Memorial Gym in El Paso, Texas.
Junior Becky Reenders led the Eagles with nine kills to go along with three block assists. Senior Lindsay Piccolini added seven kills and six block assists, while senior libero Ashley Cudney collected a match-high 16 digs. Junior Kate Sulewski chipped in 34 assists, eight digs and three blocks for EMU.
Shannon Roland paced the Hornets' attack with 16 kills and Lindsay Haupt tallied seven blocks.
Sacramento State dominated the first game, as the Hornets used a 20-11 run to open the match. EMU was never able to get on track as SSU rolled to the 30-19 decision. In the second game the two teams battled hard with EMU pulling out to a 6-5 advantage. Sacramento State would roll off 15 of the next 23 points to take control of the game en route to the 30-24 win. In the wrap-up of the series the Eagles held close to the powerhouse Big Sky Conference squad, but the Hornets were too much on this night taking the finale 30-24.
The Eagles return to the state of Michigan to participate in the Michigan State Spartan Classic, Sept. 1-2, in East Lansing, Mich. EMU is scheduled to tangle with Miami (Fla.), Villanova and MSU.
