Men's Track Finishes Second at MAC Outdoor Championships

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Eastern Michigan University men’s track team came up with some outstanding individual efforts to finish runner-up to Central Michigan University here Saturday in the final day of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Toledo at the UT Track.

The Eagles turned in two first-place finishes in Saturday’s (May 13) events, and added one other win Friday (May 12). On Saturday, redshirt junior Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) captured the 1500-meter title in 3:53.68 and the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Fred Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Loy Norrix), Adrian Simmons (Romulus, Mich.-Romulus), Eric Alejandro (Pembroke Pines, Fla.-Flanagan), and Roy Shavers (Flint, Mich.-Central) ran a 3:14.12 clocking for the win.

Other top efforts by the Eagles in the meet were turned in by: Shavers who finished second in the 400 meters in :48.02 and added a fifth-place finish in the 200 meters in :21.75; Alejandro who qualified for the NCAA Regional championships with a :52.19 clocking for third; Adam Kring (Jeddo, Mich.-Port Huron Northern) who was second in the high jump at 6-feet-10.75 inches; Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) who was third in the 5,000 meters in 14:24.96; Kyle Holmes (Detroit, Mich.-Country Day) who was third in the triple jump at 47-feet-3.75 inches.

Nowitzke was once again a work horse for the Eagles with his 1500-meter title, a second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:54.26), and a fifth in the 5,000 meters (14:26.74).

The Eagles came up with a strong effort in the 10,000 meters in Thursday’s (May 11) finals, taking 3-4 in the race with Henok Lechebo (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Toronto Collegiate) placing third in 30:51.58 and teammate Perrin fourth in 31:04.94.

Eastern continued its surge Friday (May 12) with shot putter Dave Adamek (Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada-Ridgeway Crystal Beach) winning the shot put at 58-feet-8.5 inches and coming back to capture the hammer throw in 187-feet-9 inches, with both of those throws NCAA Regional-qualifiers.

Nowitzke finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in an NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 8:54.26 and teammate Kevin Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) was sixth at 9:15.26 and Alan Walker (Phoenix, AZ-Greenway) was seventh in 9:23.11. Edouard Joliveav (Mennecy, France-University Pierre/Marie Curie) was third in the long jump at 24-feet-00.75 inches.
