Women's Tennis Falls to #1 Western Michigan in MAC Semifinals

Eagles conclude season with 4-0 loss
OXFORD, Ohio.—The fifth seeded Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team fell to intra-state rival and top seeded Western Michigan, 4-0, in Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal action here at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts on the campus of Miami University. With the loss, EMU concludes the 2006 season with a 10-11overall record and 4-4 MAC mark.
WMU jumped out early in doubles competition against EMU to take the all-important doubles point and a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 team of Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) and Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) fell, 8-3, to the Bronco tandem of Carrie Jeanmaire/Malena Remynse while the No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) fell to Western's Norika Saruta/Rattiya Hirantrat, 8-1.
During singles play, Eastern Michigan turned up its intensity in singles play, winning the first sets at first and third singles, but Western Michigan’s depth proved to be too much. Parfenyuk lost her first singles match in MAC competition this year falling to Hirantrat, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) also fell to Pryanka Parekh, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 5 position while Fernandez was upended by Kerstin Pahlsecure at the No. 6 spot to secure the Western Michigan
