Eagles Advance to Mid-American Conference Tournament Semifinals

OXFORD, Ohio.—The fifth seeded Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team avenged an earlier loss to MAC-rival Toledo by defeating the fourth seeded Rockets, 4-1, in Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal action here at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts on the campus of Miami University. With the win, EMU (10-9, 4-4 MAC) will face the of the winner of the No. 9 seeded Northern Illinois and No. 1 seeded Western Michigan.

The Eagles jumped out early in doubles competition against Toledo to take the all-important doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Aditi Krishnan (Merkhem,Ontario-Canada-Markville Secondary School) and Elizabeth Syrova (Montreal, Quebec, Canada-Ecole Secondaire Jean XXIII Dorval notched a 8-1 victory over the UT tandem of Jenny Belsky/Viviana Rivero at the No. 2 spot while the No. 3 squad of Laura Fernandez (La Vega, Dominican Republic-Colegio Inmaculada Concepcion) and Flavia Micatia (Rio de Janerio, Brazil-Cejo Terejopolis RJ) took out Toledo's Sarah VanderMolen/Sarah Horning, 8-3.

During singles play, Junior Yana Parfenyuk (Ominsk, Russia-School #64) defeated Belsky, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to remain undefeated in MAC competition this season. Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany-Albertus Magus Gymnasium) also took out Rivero, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 while Catherina Bestahorn (Ebenhausen, Germany-Iching Gymnasium) defeated Horning, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 position to secure the Eagle victory.

Eastern will take on the winner of Western Michigan and Northern Illinois in the Mid-American Conference tournament semifinals on Friday, April 29, at 1 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio.
