Junior pitcher Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) earned the win going 6.2 innings with three strike outs. Senior pitcher Nikki Denman (Toledo, Ohio-Sylvania Southview) recorded the final out in the seventh to seal the victory.
Sophomore first baseman Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Junior shortstop Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) drove in the Eagles’ other run. Sophomore outfielder Stephanie Sabo (Allen Park, Mich.-Cabrini) scored both runs.
EMU scored first in the third innings after Clark hit an RBI single to score Sabo who had earlier walked. The Eagles added their second run in the fifth inning after a Strauss double.
The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the seventh. A single and a hit batter lead to runners at first and second with two outs when Head Coach Karen Baird made the call to the bullpen, bringing in Denman. Denman got the lone batter she faced to ground out to end the game.
The Eagles return home when they host Detroit for a home opener double header at Varsity Field, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Later in the week, EMU will open Mid-American Conference play with a double header against Western Michigan, followed by back-to-back games with Northern Illinois, April 1-2.
