Senior forward named West Division Player of Week after two straight double-doubles

CLEVELAND, Ohio--Eastern Michigan University senior forward John Bowler (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame) has earned his third Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week honor for the 2005-06 season, and his fifth overall, after being selected for the week ending Feb. 4, 2006.

Bowler’s earned the latest award after leading the Eagles to two MAC West Division wins last week with a pair of double-doubles. He scored 24 points with 11 rebounds in an 81-75 win over Central Michigan Wednesday, Feb. 1, and scored 14 points with 12 rebounds in a 56-43 win at Ball State Saturday, Feb. 4. For the two games, Bowler made 9-of-17 field goals (.529), 20-of-23 free throws (.869), hauled down 23 rebounds and scored 38 points. He also added four assists. Bowler earned his first 2005-06 Player of the Week award Nov. 21, and his second, Jan. 16. Last season Bowler earned the MAC’s weekly honor, Nov. 22, 2004, and his first award came in the 2003-04 season when he was singled out, Dec. 28, 2003.

The 6-foot-9 Bowler is the 16th player in EMU men’s basketball history to reach the 1,200-point plateau. The 6-foot-9 senior forward has scored 1,222 points. He has played in 103 games for the Eagles and has started 74 times. In addition to his 1,222 points, Bowler has hauled down 686 rebounds for the ninth ranking and his 368 free throws ranks seventh. Bowler turned in the 25th double-double of his career with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win at Ball State (Feb. 4).

Bowler and the rest of the Eagles will head to Bowling Green, Ohio Tuesday, Feb. 7, to square off against the Bowling Green State University Falcons in a 7 p.m. game in Anderson Arena. EMU is on a two-game winning streak and the Eagles are 5-14 overall and 2-9 in league play. Bowling Green is 8-13 overall and 4-7 in the MAC.

The two teams met earlier this season, Jan. 18, in Ypsilanti and BGSU recorded a 79-72 win.
