Eagles held hitless in game two

Box scores: Game 1. Game 2.

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was shutout in both games of a doubleheader by Kennesaw State at the Bobbie Bailey Athletic Complex. In game one the Eagles fell 2-0, while in game two EMU was rendered hitless and lost 8-0.

With the pair of losses Eastern falls to 4-6, while the Owls even their record at 7-7.

In game one, the loss overshadowed a strong pitching performance by junior Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) who drops to 0-1 on the season. Woodrum went six solid innings allowing four hits. However, one of those hits was a two run homerun which led to the Owl’s only runs of the game.

A single through the right side led off the bottom of the fourth inning for Kennesaw State. Woodrum struck out the following batter, but third baseman Jennifer Nolan put one over the fence to put the Owls on the board, 2-0.

The Eagle offense could not manage much as they combined for five hits, all singles but things got worse for EMU.

The Owl’s Brittany Mathews (3-2) was near perfect in game two as she hurled a no hitter, the second of her career. A second inning walk and a sixth inning error kept Mathews from a perfect game.

Kennesaw State wasted no time to get on the scoreboard as EMU junior pitcher Michelle Lloyd (Akron, Ohio-Archbishop Hoban) walked the lead off batter and gave up a two run homerun to Keri McKee putting the Owls up 2-0.

KSU added five more runs in the third, fueled by Amanda Malcom’s two run two out homerun.

The Eagles are in action again, tomorrow, March 1, when they travel to No. 11 Georgia for a doubleheader. The Green and White will continue its busy week, March 3-5, when they compete in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic. EMU has scheduled games with Dartmouth, Minnesota, Syracuse and Winthrop.
