MACON, Ga. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split a pair of games in the first day of action at the 2006 Comfort Inn Classic hosted by Mercer. The Eagles dropped the first contest to Austin Peay State 6-1, and defeated Boston University 3-2.

With the split the Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season. Austin Peay State improves to 2-1, while Boston University drops to 0-1.

Against APSU, the EMU offense had no answer for Lady Governors ace Natasha Anderson (2-0) who limited the Eagles to just three hits. Eastern’s Kelly Tomczak (Dowagiac, Mich.-Dowagiac) went four innings giving up four earned runs to garner the loss and even up her record at 1-1 this year. Aimee Woodrum (Cincinnati, Ohio-Sycamore) relieved Tomczak, pitching the final three innings, striking out five Lady Govs.

Already down 6-0, the Eagles lone run came in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park) led off the inning with a walk. A double to right centerfield by Ashley Strauss (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) plated EMU’s only run.

Against BU, Michelle Lloyd (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) went the complete game recording 11 strikeouts. With the win she improves to 1-2 on the mound this season.

Lauren Clark (Flat Rock, Mich.-New Boston Huron) hit her first homerun of the season and finished two-for-four at the plate.

Eastern got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth. Lindsay Schmid (Madison, Ohio-Madison) doubled to left center. After two walks, the run was brought in by Katie Grens (Elgin, Ill.-Elgin). A second run scored off a wild pitch.

Clark’s solo shot in the fifth extended the EMU advantage to 3-0.

The Terriers scored in the sixth off a solo homerun and rallied for another run in the seventh. The rally was ended after two strikeouts closed the game.

The Eagles continue play in the Classic tomorrow with games versus George Mason and Morehead State. First pitch is schedules for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
