Class of 2006 to be inducted in the spring of 2007
YPSILANTI, Mich. -— The Eastern Michigan University E-Club has selected seven new members for the Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2006. The official induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the atrium of the EMU Convocation Center. After a formal induction ceremony and a luncheon, the inductees will be honored at the EMU-Ohio women’s basketball game which is set for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Tickets for the Hall of Fame are $35 and can be purchased by calling the EMU athletic office at 734.487.1866.
The Class of 2006 includes: Greg Howe (baseball), Carole Huston (athletic administration), Dazel Jules (men’s track), Peter Linn (men’s-women’s swimming head coach), Bob Lints (football), Nikki Stubbs (volleyball), and Gary Tyson (men’s basketball).
This year’s class will mark the 31st anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2006 induction ceremony will be held in the atrium of the Convocation Center on the Eastern Michigan west campus.
GREG HOWE 1982
Baseball: Lettered three times, from 1980-82...One of the all-time leaders in stolen bases and runs scored...Ranked first in season runs scored (72 in 1982), first and second in single-season stolen bases (31 in both 1981 and 1982), and his 80 career stolen bases was second when he graduated...Went on to have an outstanding minor-league career, making it all the way to Class AAA with the Minnesota Twins before retiring from baseball...Went on to become a chiropractic doctor.
CAROLE HUSTON 1970-76, 1991
Athletics Administrator: Served the EMU athletics department in two separate stints...From 1970-76 she was a physical education instructor and became the first women’s athletics director in 1975 and helped the department begin the first women’s athletic scholarship program...Left in 1976 to become an assistant athletics director at Bowling Green State University and returned to EMU in 1991 as a senior women’s administrator in athletics, a position she held until her retirement, May 16, 2003...Served as the interim A.D. from 1997-1999.
DAZEL JULES 1990
Track: Won six individual titles and four relay championships in the Mid-American Conference outdoor championships...Won the 100-meter title three times, in 1987 (:10.67), 1988 (:10.42), and 1989 (:10.60), the 200-meter three times, 1989 (:20.86), 1988 (:20.84), and 1987 (:20.91)...Ran on three 400-meter relay teams that won MAC outdoor titles, in 1987 (:40.26), 1988 (:40.16) and 1989 (:40.37), and one 1600-meter team that won a MAC championship, in 1989 (3:07.66)...Named the MAC Outdoor Most Valuable Performer in 1989.
Men’s Swimming: Earned three letters, from 1971-73...Swam on EMU teams that won the NAIA National Championship (1970-71), and the NCAA Division II National Championship (1971-72)...Graduated in 1974 with a double major in mathematics and biology and spent the 1975-76 season as an assistant coach to EMU Head Men’s Swimming Coach Mike Jones...Coached in high school at Shaker Heights (Ohio) from 1976-82 and from 1988-88 at Upper Arlington (Ohio) H.S. where his teams won three consecutive state titles before returning to EMU to take over for the retired Mike Jones in 1988-89...Heading into his 19th season in 2006-07, Linn has led the Eagles to 15 Mid-American Conference championships in his 18-year tenure...Has been named MAC Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year five times (1989, 1990, 1992, 1998, 2002)...Took over the reins of the EMU women’s team in 2004-05 and led the EMU women to their first-ever MAC swimming title in 2005-2006...He was named MAC Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year in both his seasons as head coach.
BOB LINTS 1970
Football: Earned varsity letters in 1968 and 1969...Chosen first-team All-America in 1969 by both the American Football Coaches Association and the NAIA...Recipient of the James M. "Bingo" Brown Award in 1969 as the team’s Most Valuable Player...Drafted in the third round of the 1970 National Football League draft by the Green Bay Packers but chose not to play professional football.
NIKKI STUBBS 1990
Volleyball: First-team All-Mid-American Conference performer in 1990...Led the MAC in kills per game in 1990...Led the team in kills (584) and digs (478) in 1990 and also in digs in 1989 (279)...Was one of the standouts on the 1990 team that played in EMU’s first-ever post-season tournament, competing in the Women’s Invitational Volleyball Championships (WIVC) where the team went 2-2 before being elimated by Tennessee...Helped the team win three in-season tournaments, the South Florida, Wright State, and Ann Arbor News Classic...The 1990 team finished runner-up in the MAC Tournament finals...Ranks third in single-match kills (37) and second in digs (43)...Also holds single-season records for kills (584 in 1990), and is third in digs (478 in 1990)...Junior-college All-American before coming to Eastern and has been named to the NJCAA Hall of Fame.
GARY TYSON 1974
Men’s Basketball: Outstanding basketball player who earned three varsity letters from 1971-74...Still holds the EMU single-game record for points scored with 47 against Wheaton (3-2-74)...Led EMU in scoring in both 1972-73 (23.5 ppg), and 1973-74 (22.4 ppg)...Helped lead the team to the final four in the NCAA-College Division Tournament in 1971-72...Ranks sixth in all-time EMU scoring with 1,530 points and his 258 career assists ranks 13th...Had a tryout with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA after graduation...Went on to work in real estate and is an assessor/appraiser for the past 30 years...Has also coached boys junior varsity and girls junior varsity basketball at both Ypsilanti Lincoln and Ann Arbor Huron High Schools.
