Junior selected for the second consecutive season
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2006 Volleyball All-MAC team Friday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. Due to a tie in the voting, this year’s team was extended to 23 student-athletes.
Five repeat selections from a year ago highlighted this year’s squad. Leading the list were Kim Horn and Molly Rutledge of Akron and Kate Bean of Toledo, who were honored for the third consecutive year. Bean was also named a member of the 2006 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-America.
Also repeating from last year’s academic team were Sarah Wilber of Kent State and Melissa Griffin of Ohio. Wilber was also named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-District.
Ten of this year’s academic team honorees were selected to all-conference teams by the league’s head coaches, including Wilber, Chrissy Gothke (Bowling Green), Kendra Halm (Bowling Green), Madeline Means (Bowling Green), Stephanie Swiger (Bowling Green), Kate Sulewski (Eastern Michigan), Carli Reihman (Miami), Gina Guide (Northern Illinois), Melissa Griffin (Ohio), and Ashley Vogl (Western Michigan).
Bowling Green led all schools with six honorees.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
