TOLEDO, Ohio – Eastern Michigan University's turnover problems continued in an 88-58 loss at Mid-American Conference West Division preseason favorite Toledo Thursday night at Savage Hall. The Rockets used a 16-1 run over the game’s first 10 minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles, who committed a season-high 25 turnovers, were lead by senior John Bowler (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Carlos Medlock (Detroit, Mich./Murray Wright) added 14 while Danny McElhinny (Hermitage, Pa.-Kennedy Catholic) poured in 11. With the loss the Eagles fell to 3-13 overall and 0-8 in the conference play.
Florentino Valencia’s 23 points led Toledo and Anton Currie added 11 points and nine boards as UT improved to 10-7 (3-6 MAC).
Medlock opened EMU's scoring with a free throw at the 16-minute mark to make it 5-1 but the Eagles wouldn't score again until junior Chris Knaub (South Bend, Ind.-St. Joseph's (Jacksonville (TX) J.C.) put back a tip-in with 10:24 left in the half. The Rockets scored 11 consecutive points during EMU's drought to go up 15, 16-1.
Things didn’t get any easier for the Green and White, as Toledo continued to pour on the points, as the deficit ballooned to 30 when UT’s Keonta Howell laid one off the glass with 3:10 left in the period to make it 39-9. Eastern chipped away to get back within 22, 43-21, as freshman Zane Gay (Olivet, Mich.-Olivet) drilled a three-pointer just before the half to send the teams into the locker room.
Toledo ended any hopes of a potential Eastern comeback, extending its lead to 56-27 with 16:42 remaining in the contest. The Rockets lead grew to 33, 74-41, as the Eagles were never able to get any closer than 27 the rest of the way.
