Phillip Plowman and Nick Conklin post victories for the Eagles
KENT, Ohio -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team fell to Kent State University in a Mid-American Conference dual match in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, Jan. 18. The loss drops EMU to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in MAC action, while Kent State improves to 8-3 and 1-0 in the MAC.
The Eagles knew they would need victories in one of the lower weight classes to pull off the road upset but Chad Sportelli spoiled Eastern's hopes early at 125. Sportelli jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead over 17th ranked Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) and held on for a 6-5 victory. Senior Phillip Plowman (Sunfield, Mich.-Lakewood) helped Eastern Michigan tie the match at 3-3 with a 7-4 decision over Drew Opfer at 133. Plowman overcame a 4-0 first deficit and scored seven straight points to put the Eagles on the board. Junior Nick Conklin (Milton, Wisc.-Milton) gave the Eagles an 8-3 lead with a 15-0 technical fall over Jared Evans at 141.
The tide was begining to turn for Kent State, as Jason Bake’s takedown during the final second of the second period made all the difference in a 3-1 win over junior Jermain Thompson (Akron, Ohio-Kenmore) at 149. Bake brought the Flashes to within two points (8-6). KSU's Kurt Gross followed it up 5-0 shutout over senior Chad Roush (Davison, Mich.-Davison). Gross’s victory was his sixth straight and gave the Flashes the lead (9-8) for good.
Jason McGee posted a 15-3 major decision victory over sophomore Don Funk (Jonesville, Mich.-Jonesville) at 165. KSU's Aaron Miller improved to 22-5 on the season with a 15-7 major decision over Josh Lewis at 174 pounds. Alex Camargo made it three straight major decisions for the Golden Flashes with a 21-8 defeat of sophomore John McClure (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa (Central Michigan)). Junior Tony Lyssiotis (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) and freshman Jake Wood (Miamisburg, Ohio-Miamisburg) were both pinned as the Golden Flashes rolled off off a string of seven straight victories to close out the match and claim their first league win
Eastern returns home Saturday, Jan. 21, to host a triple-dual with Eastern Illinois, Duquesne, and Olivet. The action is scheduled to begin at noon. The community is invited to a celebration of EMU’s All-American wrestlers and Dean Rockwell beginning with brunch at 10:30 a.m. in Warner/Bowen Field House. A sculpture dedicated in memory of Rockwell will be unveiled at 11 a.m.
