TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --
Junior Corey Nowitzke (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) ran to a 38th-place in the team championship in 30:33.5 to lead the Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team to a 24th-place finish here Monday in the NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson championship course.

Wisconsin, the 2005 champions at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, won the national championship with 37 points with Arkansas second at 105, Notre Dame third with 178, Iona fourth with 205 and Colorado fifth with 222. EMU scored 525 points for its 24th-place spot.

Chasing Nowitzke to the finish line for the Eagles, with all places listed from the team competition, were Neal Naughton (Fr.-R.-Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) in 94th (31:05.2); Josh Perrin (Fr.-R.-Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) 94th (31:11.3); Josh Karanja (Fr.-R.-Ottawa, Ontario, Canada-Nepean) 126th (31:30.4); Kyle Mena (Fr.-R.-Portage, Mich.-Northern) 180th (32:05.8); Alan Walker (Jr.-R.-Phoeniz, Ariz.-Greenway) 185th (32:16.4); and Jeff Hubbard (Fr.-R.-Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) 189th (32:17.4).

The NCAA Championships put the finishing touch on an outstanding 2005 season for Head Coach John Goodridge’s Eagles. Competing with a very young squad that had a host of freshmen, the Eagles won the Penn State Nationals Meet (Oct. 16), the Mid-American Conference Championship (Oct. 29), and placed fifth in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
