Indoor Practice Facility
St. Joe's Sports Dome
The Eastern Michigan University Indoor Practice Facility, a multi-purpose athletic dome, officially rose on a chilly Sunday morning, Feb. 7, 2010, marking a new era for the university’s sports programs. Located on Westview Drive at the northeast corner of Rynearson Stadium, the $3.9 million facility provides year-round practice space for EMU’s collegiate athletic teams, recreational leagues, intramural and club sports, and the Ypsilanti community. The project’s approval by the Board of Regents in June 2009 and the state Joint Capital Outlay Subcommittee in September followed a funding plan derived from a 2005 tuition increase, which allocated four percent to enhance campus infrastructure, accumulating a pool of $17.6 million over four years.

The dome measures 410 feet in length, 210 feet in width, and 75 feet in height, making it one of the largest indoor athletic facilities in the region. The interior features a convertible field configuration capable of hosting a full football field, an international soccer field, or four youth soccer fields. The facility includes a welcome center, expanded storage, and operational areas that support athletic events and community programming. Construction challenges included working through Michigan winter conditions, pouring 2.5 million pounds of concrete, installing synthetic turf, and inflating the large, white roof to its full height despite snow and freezing temperatures.

Since opening, the Indoor Practice Facility has undergone several key upgrades to maintain its functionality and modern standards. In 2024, the turf was replaced, and the dome structure underwent a complete replacement and upgrade, featuring double-fiber material, insulation, and skylights. Air conditioning and enhanced lighting were installed in 2025, along with netting replacement and the addition of a Spiideo camera system for technology-driven performance analysis. Renovations in 2026 included the women’s soccer locker room, lounge, and office graphics, as well as expanded storage, ensuring the facility continues to serve student-athletes with state-of-the-art resources.

The Indoor Practice Facility has become a critical asset for Eastern Michigan Athletics, allowing teams to practice, train, and compete in a controlled environment regardless of weather conditions. It also supports local leagues and community programs, providing a versatile space that enhances the university’s athletic, recreational, and outreach capabilities. With recent structural, technological, and player-focused upgrades, the facility continues to meet the demands of high-level collegiate competition and community engagement.
