Rynearson Stadium opened in 1969 and serves as Eastern Michigan University’s home for football. The venue honors Elton J. Rynearson Sr., who led EMU football for 26 seasons and produced a 114-58-15 record, including a dominant stretch from 1925 to 1930. EMU played the stadium’s first game on Sept. 27, 1969, upsetting Akron 10-3. Officials dedicated the facility on Oct. 25, 1969. Originally built with a capacity of 15,500, the stadium expanded in stages, including major seating and lighting additions in 1974 and east-side seating in 1992, producing a standard capacity of 30,200 with room for temporary expansion for large events. More than two million fans have watched games at Rynearson, with a single-game crowd record of 25,009 set in the mid 1990s.
The site has seen multiple major renovation phases. A large 1991–92 project invested roughly $13 million and added a StadiaTurf playing surface, a new team building, expanded seating, upgraded restrooms and concessions, a larger press box, and a modern scoreboard. The field surface later moved from StadiaTurf to AstroTurf in 1998, to FieldTurf in 2005, and to a gray FieldTurf replacement in 2014. The press box sits atop the west stands and gained a second level during the 1991 remodel. Media occupy the lower level while the upper level serves as university hospitality. In 2019, the $20 million Incarnati Athletic Center was attached to the north endzone, bringing centralized strength, training, medical, and recruiting spaces directly into the stadium footprint.
Recent projects focused on player facilities, fan experience, and technology. Key work completed or underway includes full turf replacement and field expansion (2024), the naming of Maxx Crosby Field (2024), concourse improvements and resurfacing (2023–24), and phased press box enhancements (2022–25). The stadium received power and technology upgrades to support broadcast and game operations. Interior upgrades cover flooring, painting, furniture, and countertop replacements across suites and hospitality spaces. Window replacements improved sightlines and climate control in premium areas. These investments align with audiovisual and connectivity upgrades taking place across EMU venues, improving Wi-Fi, broadcast fiber, and scoreboard capabilities for fans and national media.
Rynearson Stadium remains a university landmark. The facility hosts home football games, large-scale campus events, and community gatherings. The combination of historic legacy, modern amenities, and recent capital investments positions the stadium to support recruitment, match-day experience, and regional hosting opportunities for years ahead.
