The men's and women's teams competed across two separate events
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in a pair of events today, Jan. 14, with student-athletes splitting between the Falcon Early Bird Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio, and the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor.
The majority of each team competed at the Bowling Green State University-hosted Early Bird Falcon Invitational, where both the men's and women's team finished second in the team standings. The women fell just one point short of BGSU (110), while the men's score of 109 was second only to the University at Buffalo (121).
How it Happened
In Ann Arbor, EMU student-athletes recorded seven top-five finishes across eight different events. Despite finishing fifth in the event, Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) cruised past the previous meet record in the men's 1-mile event, finishing with a time of 3:59.60. Additionally, his time is good for an Icelandic National Record.
In northwest Ohio, EMU saw numerous top finishes. Kilani Harvey (Orlando, Fla.-Jones-Morehead State-Highland C.C.) led the way in the 60m, where she took the first place finish with a time of 7.55 seconds, a personal best. Teammate Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) finished first in the 200m (25.14), while Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School) won the 400m with a time of 56.0 seconds. Gazaway also took home the first place finish in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 8.63 seconds.
On the men's side, Callum Robinson (Goderich, Ontario-St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School-Simon Fraser) needed just 21.72 seconds to win the 200m race, while Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France-Lycée Honoré d'Estiennes d'Orves-American International) recorded a personal best in the 60m hurdles. His time of 7.79 currently sits in the top-10 among all NCAA performers this season, and goes down as the seventh-best performance in EMU history. Meanwhile, Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md.-Digital Harbor-Morgan State-Barton County C.C.) also recorded a personal best in the preliminary round of the same event as his 7.84-second mark is good for ninth all-time (tied with Bill Tipton, 1970; Jeff Dils, 1978). Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was also a winner, as he jumped 2.08m in the high jump. Ribeiro also picked up a victory in the long jump, with a 7.43m mark, the eighth-best mark in EMU history. Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) gave Eastern its second top-10 NCAA performance of the season with his 22.10m hurl in the weight throw, where he took first place.
