Cross Country Tallies 12 Academic All-MAC Honorees

Seven Eagles earned perfect 4.0 GPA
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2020 Men's and Women's Cross Country Academic All-MAC teams today, Jan. 20. A total of 42 student-athletes were named to the men's team while 71 student-athletes were named to the women's team. Eastern Michigan University saw 12 student-athletes named to the list.
Miami led the men's team with a total of nine honorees, followed closely by Eastern Michigan (7), Ohio (6), and Toledo (6), respectively.
On the women's side, Bowling Green tabbed nine student-athletes on this year's squad to lead all teams. Ohio and Toledo followed with eight student-athletes apiece, while Central Michigan received seven nods, respectively.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Seven Eagles were honored on the men's side in seniors Ian Cook (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) and Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), and juniors Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron), Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth), Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge), and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River). The EMU men's team paced the MAC with a trio of flawless GPAs (4.0).
Cook is a secondary education major with a 3.94 GPA, making the All-Academic team for the second time. A native of Worthington, Ohio, Cook competed in two meets during the abbreviated 2020 season, highlighted by personal-best 8K time of 26:47.5 at the MAC Championships, Nov. 21.
Day is a simulation, animation, and gaming major with a 3.83 GPA. The Ottawa, Canada product earned vital points for Eagles in their MAC Championship victory, finishing 31st with a 25:28.0 clip. Day also achieved MAC All-Academic status for the second time.
Brandal, also a secondary education major, wrapped up the semester with a flawless 4.0 GPA to attain All-Academic honors for the second time. The Huron, Ohio native clocked-in at 27:36.1 in the 8K at the Falcon Invitational, Nov. 7.
Devaney is an economics major who has now achieved Academic All-MAC status for the second time after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. The New Zealand product registered two top-10 finishes this season as he placed fourth and seventh, respectively, at the Falcon Invitational and MAC Championships. Devaney is one of two Eagles to boast Academic All-MAC and First Team honors.
Magnusson, an exercise science major, earned All-Academic honors for the first time with a 3.45 GPA. The Iceland native played a pivotal role for the Green and White as he placed third at both the Falcon Invitational and MAC Championships. Additionally, Magnusson was a First Team All-MAC selection.
Perrin is psychology major with an unblemished 4.0 GPA for the semester. The Akron, Ohio product was a solid performer for the Eagles as he rounded-out the top-20 in both the Falcon Invitational and MAC Championships. For Perrin, this marks his first time earning All-Academic honors.
Zuercher, a two-time All-Academic honoree, is a mechanical engineering major who notched a semester GPA of 3.88. The Rocky River, Ohio native was a great contributor for the Green and White as he placed 25th at the MAC Championships in a 25:14.2 clip.
Five Eagles were honored on the women's side in juniors Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton), Emily DeLine (Newport, Mich.-Airport), Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), and Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) and sophomore Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School). Every female cross country runner at EMU that participated in at least 50 percent of the contests made the MAC All-Academic team. Moreover, the team tied for first with Bowling Green for most 4.0s (4).
Chandler is a special education major who earned a faultless 4.0 GPA. The Brighton product recorded a personal-best in the 6K at the Falcon Invitational as she crossed the finish line with a time of 22:27.7. For Chandler, she has now achieved Academic All-MAC for the second time.
DeLine is an environmental science major with a 3.56 GPA for the semester. The Newport, Mich. native finished the MAC Championships with a 22:55.6 mark.
Seifert is a biology major with a 4.0 GPA who has picked up Academic All-MAC accolades for the second time. The Pennsylvania product ran a 22:48.5 at the MAC Championships.
St. Bernard is an exercise science major with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Newport, Mich. native recorded the third-fastest time of any Eagle at the 2020 MAC Championships, as she finished the course in 22:48.4. For St. Bernard, this her second time receiving Academic All-MAC honors.
Davies is a communication major with a 4.0 GPA , who has earned Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. The England product was the Eagles' top performer this season, attaining two top-20 finishes, highlighted by 21:49.2 mark to place 19th at the MAC Championships.
