Meyers and Smith Record Top-10 EMU Performances at Bryan Clay Invite

Smith’s Steeplechase effort ranks fourth in EMU laurels while Meyers’ 5000m ranks third

AZUSA, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – Redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) and senior captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) represented the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University Thursday, April 18. Both Eagles marked personal-best efforts and top-10 performances in program history.
Smith kicked off the day with an eighth-place finish in the 3000m Steeplechase, finishing with a time of 10:20.94. Her efforts were good for fourth-best in school history, while they also top any Mid-American Conference athlete's performance this season by seven seconds. Moreover, her time currently ranks as the 23rd-fastest run by an NCAA athlete in 2019.
Meyers continued the day with a 14th-place effort in Heat 1 of the 5000m, recording a time of 16:08.63. The Zionsville, Ind. native's efforts bested her own top performance by almost six seconds, as she continues to hold the third-best 5000m run in program history. Additionally, Meyers' performance is currently the second-best run in the MAC and the 26th-best performance seen in the nation this season.
Both athletes continue competition Friday, April 19, competing in the 1500m. Meyers will run in the invitational heats, set to begin at 7:50 p.m. PT, while Smith will compete in the open heats, scheduled for 10:05 p.m. PT.
