Matt Shoemaker gets called up to join the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- Former Eastern Michigan University pitcher Matt Shoemaker has been called up from the minors to join Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the organization announced, Sept. 16. Following a season pitching for the team's Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees, Shoemaker's contract was selected by the Angels for the remainder of the season. The September call-up makes the first time the 26-year old has played with the big league club.

Following his career at EMU, Shoemaker joined the Angels organization in 2008 as a free agent, starting with the team's rookie league affiliate before earning his spot in the big leagues today. Through six seasons pitching in professional baseball at different levels, the Wyandotte, Mich. native has compiled a record of 49-40 with a 4.46 earned run average. He boasts an impressive career strikeout-to-walk ratio, fanning 624 batters while only walking 192  in 761 innings of work.

For the past four seasons, the former Eagle has pitched for the Angels' highest level minor league team in Salt Lake, Utah. During the 2013 campaign, Shoemaker proved to be the ace for the Bees, leading the team in wins (11), starts (29), innings pitched (184.1) and strikeouts (160). He finished the season with a record of 11-13 to go along with a 4.64 ERA.

As a pitcher at EMU, Shoemaker started out as a reliever, a spot he thrived in during the 2007 season. That year, the right-handed pitcher nailed down a school-record 14 saves for the Green and White, leading the team to a Mid-American Conference regular season championship. In his final year at Eastern, Shoemaker worked his way into a starting role by making seven starts in 15 total appearances. Throughout his career at EMU, he pitched 105.1 innings in 52 appearances with an ERA of 5.47.
