MANHEIM, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) –
Eastern Michigan University redshirt-senior wrestler Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) was named to the 2013 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team, the organization announced Monday, May 20. This is Sulzer's third consecutive year that he has been honored by the NWCA for exceling on the mat and in the classroom.

Sulzer was among 82 NCAA Division I student-athletes to earn a spot on the 2013 NCWA All-Academic Team. He was one-of-six from the Mid-American Conference to be named to the team. Central Michigan University had a representative, while Ohio University had four members of its team earn the honor.

There are a pair of ways qualify to be on the NWCA All-Academic team, the student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 grade point average and qualify for the NCAA Nationals or have won 60% of his total matches. Another way to earn the honor is by maintaining a 3.0 grade point average and being named to the NCAA All-American teams.

“The NWCA All-Academic Team and Individual Team is one of the best acknowledgements that we can give to our coaches and athletes at the end of a physically grueling season,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “These young men have proved that they are not only talented competitors but are leaders in the classroom as well. The NWCA Board of Directors and staff looks forward to watching these student-athletes continue their success at the collegiate level and eventually as the leaders of the future once they earn their college degrees.”

Sulzer carries a 3.8 grade point average while earning his MBA. He already earned a bachelor's degree from EMU in accounting. The Cleveland, Ohio native finished the year at 18-11 with a 13-8 mark in dual-meets and a perfect 4-0 mark in MAC matches to complete his career with an 87-56 record. His win total is good for the fifth-most victories in EMU history. He made back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships in 2011 and 2012, while narrowly missing a third trip this season when he took third place at the MAC Championships, March 10.

“Three years in a row Aaron has been on this team.  That is a huge accomplishment,” remarked Eastern Head Wrestling Coach Derek DelPorto. “He has been the poster boy of exactly what we look for in our student-athletes here at EMU. His achievements on the mat and in the classroom set him up for a great future in whatever he does.”
