YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The radio broadcast team for the 121st season of Eastern Michigan University football will be comprised of longtime play-by-play voice Matt Shepard with former Detroit Lion standout Herman Moore taking over the color analyst duties.
WEMU will continue to serve as the FM flagship and originating station for EMU football and basketball broadcasts. In 2011-12, WEMU broadcast more than 50 live games, as well as interviews and stories during WEMU's news programs.
Listeners in eight counties can catch Eagles' games on 89.1 FM. As a public radio station with a large broad-based audience, WEMU's signal extends from Washtenaw County to the Detroit metropolitan and Toledo, Ohio markets
The 2012 season marks the 12th year that veteran Detroit-area broadcaster Matt Shepard will call the action on the field for the EMU football broadcast team. Shepard first handled EMU football play-by-play duties during the 1999 season. He returned in 2002, and has held the post for nine straight seasons. A widely known football and basketball broadcaster, Shepard is the voice of University of Michigan men's basketball team as well as the morning drive host on WDFN (1130 AM) in Detroit.
During his career, he has called NFL Europe games for FOX and, in 2005, Arena Football League games for Fox Sports Net and was the broadcast voice for a pair of WNBA Championships by the Detroit Shock. Shepard's Fox Sports Detroit resume also includes extensive work as a reporter for the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers, and play-by-play work for the Michigan High School Athletic Association football state finals and the CCHA hockey television package.
Meanwhile, this will not be Moore's first experience behind a microphone. From 1996-98, he co-hosted a Lions radio show every Monday night in addition to appearing on local television shows on Sunday nights. He also served as a color analyst in 2007 for the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League. Moore graduated from the University of Virginia in 1990 with a degree in rhetoric and communication studies.
The four-time (1994-97) NFL Pro Bowler played 11 seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he set several receiving records. The 1991 first-round draft pick (10th overall) broke an NFL record with 123 receptions in 1995, and was the second player ever (after Jerry Rice) to record three 100-reception seasons. He leads the Lions in almost every historical receiving category including receptions (670), receiving yards (9,174) and receiving touchdowns (62).
“After several years of doing in-game, pre-game, and post-game shows, for professional and high school sports, I am really excited to join the radio broadcast team for Eastern Michigan University football this season," said Moore. "Since retiring from professional football in 2004, I've remained very involved in sports and business in Michigan. This opportunity will also provide me with continued growth and development toward my professional goals in sports broadcasting. While the EMU venue is new to me, I look forward to sharing my experience, passion and enjoyment for the game with Eagles fans this season.”
Veteran broadcaster Chad Bush will also fill in for select football broadcasts throughout the campaign. The 2012-13 season marks the fifth consecutive year that Bush has called games for EMU. Prior to joining the Green and White, Bush served from 2006-09 as the broadcaster of Wayne State University football and men's basketball. A graduate of Orchard Lake St. Mary's High School, Bush was on the football team at Central Michigan University before transferring to WSU to finish his degree in Speech Communication.
