Camila Olaio named top assistant for Berrington’s program
YPSILANTI, Mich. –– Camila Olaio, who has held the position of graduate assistant coach on Eastern Michigan University head volleyball coach Kim Berrington’s staff last year, has been elevated to assistant coach, it was announced today. Her appointment is effective immediately.
Olaio replaces Sara Schaub, who was named the head coach at Montana State University-Billings in February.
"Camila is the right fit for us here at Eastern Michigan University," stated Berrington. "She is a huge asset in recruiting, as she has a understanding of being a Division I level player. Combine that with her international coaching and playing experience and she will add a new dimension to our staff and program. Plus adding an alum is always a special hire"
Olaio returned to Ypsilanti prior to the 2006 season after spending the year before that working in international relations in Brazil.
One of the most complete athletes ever to don the Green and White, Olaio earned four letters as a volleyball player from 1998-2002. She is EMU’s career leaders in aces with 233 and also ranks on the career charts in assists, digs and games played. Known for her trademark powerful jump serve, Olaio broke the Mid-American Conference record for career service aces and EMU’s single-season record, each of which stood for more than 15 years.
Olaio led the Eagles in aces every season during her career, in addition to topping the MAC in assists per game in 2002. For her efforts during her senior campaign, she was named first team All-MAC and became just the third player in school history to garner All-Region honors, as an honorable mention All-Mideast nod.
A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Olaio played for Tenis Club where she was named the best all-around player in 1995. She was also selected the best passer in 1993 and 1994, the best blocker in 1995, the best setter in 1996 and the best hitter in 1997.
Olaio then joined the EMU volleyball program in 1998 and graduated in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in business with an expected graduation date later this year.
The Eagles open the 2007 season at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational, Aug. 24-25. Eastern then travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the Xavier Tournament, Aug. 31- Sept. 1. The Green and White face Wright State before heading back to Washtenaw County to play in the Michigan Tournament, Sept. 7. The Eagles will host Big Ten foe Michigan State before wrapping up the non-conference schedule at the Albany Tournament, Sept. 14-15.
