Abiola was the MAAC Rookie of the Year in 2017-18
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro announced the addition of Iona College transfer and reigning Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year, Toyosi Abiola (London, England-City of London Academy (Iona)) (pronounced Toy-yo-see Ab-EE-oh-lah) for the 2018-19 academic year. Abiola joins the Eagles for the upcoming season with three years of eligibility remaining, but will not be eligible to play until the 2019-20 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.
"We are ecstatic to add a player of Toyosi's caliber," Castro said. "Obviously she had a standout freshman year, being named rookie of the year in the MAAC. Toyosi will fit in perfectly both in our style of play and from a team chemistry perspective."
Abiola racked up awards following a sensational freshman season for the Gaels in which she averaged 11.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. A unanimous selection for MAAC Rookie of the Year, the 5-foot-7 guard also landed on the All-MAAC Rookie Team and was a league-leading nine-time MAAC Rookie of the Week honoree. She led all MAAC freshmen and ranked inside the league's top-15 overall in scoring, minutes (34.6), free throw percentage (72.0 percent), and three-pointers made per game (1.5). In her collegiate debut against nationally ranked Arizona, Nov. 10, Abiola scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting in 39 minutes of action. The London, England native later put together a career-best 21-point effort against Canisius, Jan. 2, on 8-of-16 shooting, including a trio of triples.
Overall, Abiola registered 17 double-digit scoring performances, highlighted by four 20+ point showings, while leading Iona in scoring four times. Defensively, she was just as strong, ranking second on the team in steals and fourth in rebounding.
Abiola joins an Eastern Michigan team that is coming off a Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals appearance, where EMU nearly upset top-seeded and eventual "Sweet Sixteen" participant Central Michigan.
