EMU was tied with Northern Illinois for the third-most players honored
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team landed six student-athletes on the 2018 Academic All-MAC team, the conference announced Monday, June 11. The Eagles tied with Northern Illinois University for the third-most players honored.
The six honored include senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic), junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma), sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), sophomore Zach Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), and junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern).
Rensel Jr. and Schuemann each earned the award for the second consecutive season.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year or junior college transfers are not eligible.
DeVenney had a splendid final season in the Green and White as EMU's top pitcher, as well as a two-way threat in the outfield for the baseball program. The righty led EMU with a 2.49 ERA in 94.0 innings pitched, including 56 strikeouts and a 6-2 overall record. His ERA ranked third in the conference and 70th in the nation, while his innings pitched were fourth-most in the MAC. In addition, his MAC-only ERA of 1.94 was second.
The Second Team All-MAC selection in 2018 started a conference-most tying 15 times on the mound, and in those 15 starts did not allow more than three earned runs. He was also one of just two pitchers in the MAC this season to not give up a home run (Min. 1.0IP/game), joining MAC Pitcher of the Year Joey Murray. Finally, DeVenney's 2.49 ERA at the end of the season was the lowest for an EMU starting pitcher since George Biddle finished with a 2.42 in 2007.
In the classroom, DeVenney collected 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Baseball Team accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.85 GPA in April with his degree in finance.
Hester, who has a 3.21 GPA in communication, was one of EMU's most reliable bullpen arms, appearing in 16 games, totaling 22.1 innings. The lefty tallied a win and three saves, while striking out 23 batters and holding opponents to a .250 batting average.
Nick Jones, a marketing major with a 3.82 GPA, battled through injuries to have a solid sophomore campaign. The catcher and infielder appeared in 41 games, making 37 starts. He finished with a .250 batting average, including 34 hits, five doubles, 21 RBIs, and 16 runs. He was EMU's top defensive catcher, throwing out a team-high 14 base stealers.
Owings was one of EMU's top bats in his sophomore season, as he ended the season leading the team in batting, slugging, and on-base percentages, as well as home runs and walks. The infielder also ranked second on EMU in hits, RBIs, doubles, runs scored, steals, and total bases. He had a hit in 38-of-48 games, as well as an 11-game hitting streak, and a 31-game reached base streak this season. In addition, Owings was also EMU's co-leader, with 18 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games in 2018.
Owings was tabbed as the third baseman on the All-Defensive team and a First Team All-MAC selection after making 28 of his 46 starts there this season. In 194 chances, Owings had 134 putouts and 54 assists, while making just six errors for a fielding percentage of .969.
In the classroom, Owings collected 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Baseball Team accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He holds a 3.84 GPA in business management.
Rensel, who owns a 3.53 GPA in Chemistry, spent time as EMU's primary designated hitter, as well as a first baseman. He finished with a .242 batting average, 30 hits, including four doubles and two home runs, as well as 17 runs driven in and six runs scored. He was reliable when in the field, as he had no errors in 114 chances, including 107 putouts and seven assists, for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Selected in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics, Schuemann was a true five-tool threat for the Eagles in 2018, showing production in all aspects of the game. He started all 56 games for the Eagles, 54 at shortstop, and led EMU in hits (72), runs (43), doubles (16), total bases (100), and steals (24). He was also second in batting average (.317), slugging (.441), and OBP (.400), as well as third in home runs (4).
His steals, doubles, and at bats were second in the Mid-American Conference, while his hits were fourth, total bases seventh, and runs eighth. He was also the second-toughest player to strike out in the MAC, as he was only fanned 23 times in 227 at bats. Nationally, Schuemann was 45th in the country in steals, and the 93rd toughest player to strikeout.
In the field, Schuemann had 173 assists, good for first in the MAC, while he also helped turn 32 double plays. Schuemann's overall efforts earned him Second Team All-MAC honors at the conclusion of the season. The Portage, Michigan native was also a model student, as he holds a 3.78 grade point average in marketing to earn Academic All-MAC honors.
