Valentin was the only MAC student-athlete selected for the scholarship in the winter 2017-18

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University senior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J.-Holmdel) of the gymnastics team was selected as one of the 29 women's winter sport recipients of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which recognizes student-athletes with plans on attending graduate school for their athletic and academic achievements, along with their work in the community and demonstrated leadership.

"I'd like to thank the NCAA and EMU for the support in my pursuit of a career in medicine," said Valentin. "I am excited for the next step in my journey and to help people follow their passions, as many physicians have helped me pursue mine in gymnastics. Earning this scholarship has been a great way to cap off my career as a student-athlete."

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a $7,500 scholarship to be applied toward the graduate degree program of Valentin's choice, is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, and are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent members of winter sports teams, including Basketball, Bowling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track and Field, Rifle, Skiing, and Swimming and Diving.

As one of EMU's most consistent performers throughout her entire gymnastics career representing the Green and White, Valentin continued her dominance in 2018. The senior qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship on bars with an RQS of 9.865, while also serving as an alternate on beam with an RQS of 9.855. Throughout the season, Valentin produced scores of 9.75-or-better on bars in nine of the 11 meets she competed in, earned a score of 9.825-or-greater seven times in the event, and tallied a 9.875-or-better on beam and bars a total of eight times.

The Holmdel, N.J. native tied her impressive personal-record of 9.95 on bars, March 11, which ties the program record and makes her the only Eagle to ever reach the mark twice. A senior biology student, Valentin became the first gymnast in program history to earn Google Cloud Academic All-District® Team honors from CoSIDA.
