Softball Concludes Season at Western Michigan

5/5/2018 5:52:00 PM | Softball

EMU finished the year with an 11-39 record

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by Western Michigan University in its season finale at Ebert Field Saturday, May 5. The Eagles came up short in game one, 3-2, before falling, 2-0, in the second game of the doubleheader.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 2, Western Michigan 3

EMU was spurned by missed opportunities in game one, as Eastern stranded eight in a one-run defeat.

Seven Eagles notched hits, while junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) registered EMU's RBIs in 1-for-4 efforts.

Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) earned the start, striking out one and allowing two runs in 2.0+ innings of work. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) went the final 4.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits in relief.

Senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) doubled with one out in the first, bringing Akles to the plate. In front in the count 2-1, Akles singled to left center to bring Hostetler across and give EMU a 1-0 edge.

Western Michigan got it back in its half of the frame, courtesy of a sacrifice fly, to even things up at one early.

WMU took the lead in the second, as the Broncos plated a run on two hits. Hurley settled in after an RBI double, picking up her first strikeout of the day, to keep the game tight, 2-1, into the third.

Trujillo entered the game in the next inning, inheriting a runner on second with no outs, but promptly retired three consecutive batters to keep the one-run deficit through three.

After a 1-2-3 fourth from Trujillo, the Eagles tied the game in the fifth. Freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) and Hostetler led the inning off with walks, and Olmos provided the RBI on a two-out single to even the score at two.

The Broncos reclaimed the lead in the sixth. A leadoff double came around to score on a rocket down the first base line, but Trujillo escaped the jam without any further damage.

The Eagles rallied in the seventh, as Skeens led things off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hostetler. She advanced to third on a groundout, but a fly out left the Green and White short, 3-2.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 0, Western Michigan 2
Trujillo got the start in game two, scattering four hits over 4.0 innings of work, while allowing just one run. Junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) finished the game, allowing one run over 2.0 innings.

The game was scoreless into the third as neither team mustered more than one baserunner in each of the first two innings.

In the third, Western took the lead with a run on two hits. A one-out walk was followed by a double, putting runners on second and third. After an RBI single gave WMU the slim edge, EMU doubled up the Broncos on a ground ball to Akles at third.

Eastern's best scoring chance came in the sixth with Western in front 1-0. Senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) opened the sixth with an infield single and was bunted to second before taking third on a pitch in the dirt, but could not get any closer as EMU's rally was thwarted.

WMU added an insurance run in its half of the sixth en route to handing Eastern a 2-0 defeat.

Eastern Michigan finishes the season with an 11-38 overall record, including a 6-16 MAC mark.

Notes
Haley Hostetler finishes her career having played in 201 consecutive games, the most of any Eagle in program history. The senior also holds the program record for stolen base percentage, while she concludes her career ranked 14th in doubles with 30.

Nicolle Miranda finished her EMU career with the 11th-most strikeouts (233) in the eighth-most innings pitched (443). Trisha Trujillo concluded her career with the 10th-most innings pitched (388) and the 13th-most strikeouts (206).
