Nicolle Miranda struck out eight in a complete game shutout
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A complete game masterpiece by junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) pushed the Eastern Michigan University softball team past Western Michigan University, 1-0, at Ebert Field Friday, May 4. Head Coach Melissa Gentile picked up her 100th career win, while EMU (10-37, 6-15 MAC) beat Western (26-23, 12-10 MAC) for the first time since 2011.
Miranda turned in her best outing of the season, striking out eight over a full seven innings of work, while yielding just four hits. It was Miranda's most strikeouts since fanning eight against Northern Illinois, April 22, 2016. Additionally, the complete game shutout was Miranda's fourth of her career, and first of the season.
Senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) led the Eagles, accounting for two of EMU's six hits, in a 2-for-3 day, while fellow senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) tallied Eastern's lone RBI, going 1-for-4 at the plate.
Eastern Michigan took the lead in the third, as Schilke doubled with two outs. With the lineup turning back to the top, Skeens ripped a base knock to left center to score Schilke and put EMU in front, 1-0.
The Broncos rallied with two outs in their half of the third after a pair of strikeouts by Miranda. Putting two on with two out, Miranda caught the batter swinging for the inning-ending strikeout.
From there, Miranda cruised, scattering one hit over the final four innings to preserve the 1-0 win.
Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan close out the regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow, May 5. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Ebert Field in Kalamazoo.
