Men's Track and Field Lands 11 on Academic All-MAC Team

The 11 student-athletes ties for the second-most in the conference

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had 11 student-athletes named to the All-Mid-American Conference Academic Team for the 2018 outdoor season, the league offices announced Wednesday, May 20. EMU's 11 student-athletes ties for the second most in the conference with Miami University, while the University of Akron leads all program's with 12.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Receiving the award for Eastern is: sophomore Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage), redshirt junior Austin Hazek (Medina, Ohio-Medina), redshirt senior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich.-Owosso), senior Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio-Medina), senior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich.-Thomas J. Anderson), sophomore Drew Lament (Lakeview, Ohio-Waynesfield-Goshen), senior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary-Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium), senior Travis McCuaig (Big Rapids, Mich.-Morley Stanwood), redshirt junior Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich.-Avondale), redshirt senior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason), and junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton).
Beckom had a career season in his second year of competition, competing in five meets for the Eagles primarily in sprinting events. A psychology major with a 3.61 GPA, Beckom set personal-records in both the 100m and 200m dash. In the 100m, Beckom ran to a personal-best mark of 10.74 at the Don Kleinow Invitational to win the event title. In the 200m, the Saginaw, Mich. native set his fastest personal mark of 22.29 at the Hillsdale GINA Relays, placing third.
Hazek, a junior criminology/criminal justice major, has accumulated a GPA of 3.24 while serving as one of EMU's most consistent throwers.Hazek set personal records in every event he competed in this season, including the hammer throw where he reached a PR of 51.05m at the MAC Championships to place seventh. His personal-records in the discus and shot put both came at the Don Kleinow Invitational, as he threw to a distance of 44.36m in the discus, and 12.33m in the shot put.
Hailing from Owosso, Mich., Hess has put up an impressive GPA of 3.81 while majoring in computer science. The senior competed in five meets for the Eagles during the outdoor season, including the MAC Championships where he placed 12th in the 800m with a time of 1:57.11. He also notched a personal-record in the 800m during the regular season, racing to a time of 1:53.75 at the Don Kleinow Invitational.
Another consistent member of the throws squad who earned the academic accolade is Hierholzer, who has a 3.20 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering technology. Hierholzer competed in six meets this season, participating in the hammer, discus, and shot put. At the MAC Championships, Hierholzer placed eighth in both the discus and hammer throw, with marks of 45.70m and 48.42m, respectively. Additionally, he also recorded a personal-best hammer throw of 49.08m at the Toledo Invitational.
A product design and development major with a 3.65 GPA, Jozwiak rounded out his career competing in five meets for the Eagles this season. The senior ran to a strong season-best 800m time of 1:53.99 at the Don Kleinow Invitational. Moreover, Jozwiak also assisted the 3200m relay team to a time of 8:05.84 at the Tennessee Relays, placing fifth against a talented group of relay cohorts.
Lament also competed in five meets for EMU, having mostly carried the weight in multis. The undecided sophomore with a 3.37 GPA placed seventh in the decathlon at the MAC Championships with a total score of 6132. Lament saw the most growth during the regular season, as he set a personal-record in the decathlon with a total of 6147 at the Tennessee Relays, placing ninth.
Another senior who closed out his respectful career donning the Green and White was Matko, who competed in four meets for Eastern as a mid-distance threat. The Racalmas, Hungary native ran strong in the 800m at the MAC Championships, boasting a time of 1:56.03. In one of the last races of the regular season, Matko brought home hardware at the Toledo Invitational after running to an 800m time of 1:56.59 to capture bronze. Matko has a cumulative GPA of 3.32 while studying accounting.
McCuaig, a sports management major with a GPA of 3.47, performed well in jumps throughout the season. In the postseason, McCuaig placed fifth in the high jump with at the MAC Championships with a height of 2.01m, serving as a point contributor to the team's MAC Championship. He also brought home gold in the high jump at the Toledo Invitational, where he posted his season-best mark of 2.02m.
An exercise science major with a cumulative GPA of 3.60, Purcilly performed tremendously in the shot put this season. Hailing from Troy, Mich., Purcilly competed in five meets for the Eagles, including the conference championships where he placed eighth in the shot put with a mark of 15.99m. In the regular season, Purcilly marked a career-best shot put distance of 16.87m at the Penn Relays, which moved him into 10th all-time in the EMU outdoor record book. Additionally, he took home a pair of medals in the shot put, as he finished second at the Spartan Invitational with a toss of 16.32m, while placing third at the Don Kleinow Invitational with a throw of 16.06m.
A pivotal piece in EMU bringing home its 22nd overall outdoor MAC Championship was Raymond. The senior from Erie, Mich. placed no worse than fifth in all three events he competed in during the outdoor championship. His highest placement came in the 10,000m, as he raced to a finishing time of 30:43.85 to finish third in the event. Furthermore, he finished fourth in the 5000m (14:40.40) and fifth in the 1500m (3:56.93), ending the meet with 15 points. He also marked a personal-record in the 5000m with a time of 14:40.40, and ran to an NCAA East Regionals 10,000m qualifying time of 29:25.66. An art major, Raymond has a solid cumulative GPA of 3.68.
Finally, Underwood added depth to Eastern's already stout squad of sprinters. At the MAC Championships, Underwood ran the opening leg of the championship 4x400 relay quartet, earning First Team All-MAC honors for his efforts. Additionally, Underwood placed third in the 400m with a time of 47.76 at the championship meet. In the regular season, Underwood assisted that same relay squad to an NCAA East Regionals qualifying time of 3:07.38, and also marked a personal-record 100m time of 10.81 at the Don Kleinow Invitational, placing second. A biology major, Underwood has a cumulative GPA of 3.20.
