Baseball Tripped Up in MAC Tournament Opener

5/23/2018 3:52:00 PM | Baseball

EMU will play in an elimination game tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Video Highlights.

AVON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team couldn't get the offensive firepower it needed in a 6-2 defeat to No. 3 seeded Ball State University in the opening round of the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon, May 23, at Sprenger Stadium.

EMU (22-33, 14-13 MAC) put up four scoreless innings over the final four frames, but a 6-0 deficit after the fifth inning was enough to saddle the Eagles with the defeat and force them into the elimination side of the bracket.

Freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) and junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) combined to blank the Cardinals (32-24, 17-10 MAC) over the final 4.2. McGuire pitched 2.2 of those, only allowing two walks and no hits. Shaver tossed the final two, yielding two hits and a walk along with a strikeout.

Offensively, EMU had six hits, led by a two-hit day from junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern). The All-MAC Second Team honoree also had a walk and a run scored. Sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) had the lone EMU RBI on an infield single.

The first two innings went by without much incident, as Ball State stranded runners in scoring position in both frames. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the third with three runs, and followed that up with three more in the fourth to leap ahead 6-0 into the fifth inning.

After a scoreless fifth, EMU got the bats going in the sixth, striking for two runs to break the shutout. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) led off with a walk, and promptly stole second. Then, on an infield single from Schuemann, BSU threw the ball away to allow Jones to score and plate EMU's first run. Later in the frame, with Schuemann on third, Nick Jones legged out an infield single to plate another run, and cut the deficit to four with three trips to the plate left.

McGuire completed his second-consecutive scoreless inning in the sixth, followed by a blank frame from Shaver in the seventh to keep the score 6-2. Shaver pitched another scoreless inning in the eighth, but EMU's offense did not take advantage, keeping it a four run game into the ninth. There, EMU got a pair of base runners on, but Ball State avoided giving up any more runs in the four run defeat.

Eastern will be back in action tomorrow morning, May 24, for the first elimination game of the MAC Tournament. EMU will face No. 5 Toledo, which fell to Central Michigan on a walk-off squeeze, at 10 a.m.
