YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team continues its postseason at the NCAA East Regional, Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. The Eagles have four sprinters, two distance runners, two throwers, one hurdler, and one pole vaulter competing in the NCAA preliminary round.
Of the 10 total EMU student-athletes, four have prior experience competing at regionals, while two took part in last season's meet. Redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge) and junior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) serve as the pair of Eagles who competed in the 2017 regional competition, and will also be competing in the same events this weekend. In last season's regionals, Andresson came away with an 18th-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase after running to a career-best time of 8:54.75. Moreover, Ziegenfuss claimed the highest placement of his career in regionals with a 20th-place finish in the javelin, throwing to a distance of 62.19m.
The most experienced Eagle heading into the weekend is redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), as he has qualified to regionals in every outdoor season he has competed in. Although he has participated in the 400m dash in each of the last trips he has made to the regional contest, Brown will solely run a leg in the 4x400m relay this weekend.
Joining Brown in the 1600m relay are three Eagles who will be competing in regionals for the first time, as junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and freshmen Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) and Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts) get their first shot at qualifying to the NCAA Championships this weekend. Although this quartet has a lack of experience at regionals, they are poised to impress after having put together the sixth-fastest relay time in EMU history (3:07.38), and best since 2014, during the regular season.
Action begins Thursday with junior Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron) competing in the hammer throw at 11:30 a.m. Etchen and Raymond will also participate in the first day of competition, with the pole vault starting at 1 p.m. and the 10,000m commencing at 9 p.m. Junior Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) and Andresson will each compete Friday, with Findlay's 110m hurdles beginning at 4:30 p.m. and Andresson's steeplechase starting at 8:20 p.m. Finally, Ziegenfuss and the javelin competitors will get started at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while the 4x400 relay team rounds out Eastern's weekend later that night at 9 p.m.
