Combs joins the Eagles after spending two years at Oklahoma State
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro announced the addition of Oklahoma State University transfer, Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) for the 2018-19 academic year. Combs joins the Eagles for the upcoming season with two years of eligibility remaining, but will not be eligible to play until the 2019-20 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.
"We are ecstatic about Areanna joining our family," Castro said. "Her size and skill-set will be a great addition to our roster and she will fit in perfectly with our style of play. Coming from successful programs both collegiality and at the high school level, she has an played integral part of her team's success."
In two years at Oklahoma State, Combs appeared in 45 games. Combs played herself into a starting role this past season before sustaining a season-ending injury. Starting in all 14 games she appeared in, she average 8.5 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per contest. Despite limited minutes, Combs set a career-high in nearly every statistical category for the Cowgirls in 2017-18, including shooting 46.3 percent from the field. A well-rounded player, Combs flirted with a triple-double in OSU's win over UTRGV, Nov. 17, 2017, finishing with 10 points, seven assists, and six steals. She followed that performance up with a career-high 18-point effort against Southern, Nov. 30, 2017. Combs put together six double-digit scoring performances as a sophomore, while also posting three-or-more assists seven times.
A 5-foot-10 guard out of Oklahoma City, Okla., Combs was a standout at Putnam City West High School. Sidelined with an injury as a senior, Combs averaged 17.5 points per game in her junior season en route to being named All-State Honorable Mention by The Oklahoman and Big 10 Conference Newcomer of the Year. Prior to attending Putnam City West, Combs was a second team all-conference selection as a sophomore at Western Heights High School.
Combs joins an Eastern Michigan team that is coming off a Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals appearance, where EMU nearly upset top-seeded and eventual "Sweet Sixteen" participant Central Michigan.
