Trujillo's Walk-Off Highlights Softball's Split with Oakland

5/2/2018 6:40:00 PM | Softball

Trisha Trujillo went 1-for-3 with two RBIs

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Late-game heroics lifted the Eastern Michigan University softball team to a split with Oakland University Wednesday, May 2, at Varsity Field. Oakland (18-24) took game one, 3-0, before senior Trisha Trujillo's (Whittier, Calif.-California) walk-off single gave Eastern (10-37) a 7-6 victory in the night cap.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 0, Oakland 3
Senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline), freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin), and senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) combined for EMU's three hits. Schilke and Holland each registered doubles in 1-for-3 efforts, while Olmos went 1-for-3 with a single.

Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) struck out one and allowed three runs in 6.1 innings of work. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) tossed the final two-thirds in relief, picking up a strikeout.

Hurley pitched her way out jams early, stranding eight Golden Grizzlies over the first five innings to keep the game scoreless.

Oakland drove in the first run of the game in the sixth. The leadoff batter singled and was sacrificed to second before swiping third on a one-out walk. With runners on the corners, a single to left brought in the go-ahead run, giving the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.

OU extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of solo shots in the seventh, ending Hurley's day. Trujillo entered in relief and retired back-to-back batters, but EMU could not string a rally together at the plate, falling 3-0.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 7, Oakland 6

EMU tallied 10 hits spread among seven Eagles, led by senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) and sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce). Hostetler registered the 25th multi-hit game of her career, going 2-for-3 with a double, while Chretien recorded a career-high three hits for her third multi-hit effort of the year. Additionally, junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) and Trujillo added the first RBI's of their careers in a well-balanced offensive effort for the Green and White. Trujillo finished the game 1-for-3 with a team-best two RBIs.

Oakland's hot-hitting carried over to game two, as the Golden Grizzlies plated a run on two hits in their first trip to the plate.

Eastern's offense came alive though, springing for six runs on four hits, three walks, and an HBP. Freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) got things started with an infield single and Hostetler followed suit with one of her own, putting two on with no outs. Olmos even the score with an RBI single to right, leaving a runner on third for Holland. With the squeeze on, Holland's bunt went towards third, bringing Hostetler across and giving EMU a 2-1 lead. Three bases loaded walks and an RBI groundout pushed Eastern's lead to 6-1 with one inning in the books.

A three-run homer by Oakland cut Eastern Michigan's in the fourth, before the Golden Grizzlies trimmed it to one with a run in the fifth. OU had a chance to take the lead courtesy of a pair of EMU miscues, but junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) escaped the jam with a strikeout.

In front 6-5, the Eagles put two on in the bottom of the fifth, but could not capitalize to maintain the score into the sixth.

After Oakland evened the score at 6-6, Peters got the Eagles' half of the sixth started with a leadoff single. Ripping a single through the left side, Peters picked up the first hit of her career. She quickly moved to second and then took third on a wild pitch, but a fly out and a ground out stranded the go-ahead run short.

Miranda pitched around a leadoff double to set the Eagles up for late game heroics with the heart of the order due up. Sophomore Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) laced a double to right center, and Chretien singled to put runners on the corners for Trujillo. Making just her seventh career plate appearance, Trujillo blooped a single to right, scoring Isaly, and giving EMU a 7-6 walk-off win.

Eastern Michigan finishes the season on the road this weekend, Friday-Saturday, May 4-5, at Western Michigan University. The three-game Mid-American Conference West clash gets started with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday, before the regular season comes to a close with a twin bill Saturday at 1 p.m.
