Men's cross country and Volleyball honored for excellence in its multi-year Academic Progress Report
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country and volleyball teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards Wednesday, May 16, for their exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA's Academic Performance Program. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. This is the sixth straight year that volleyball has been honored, while it marks the first time for men's cross country since 2004-05.
The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR). The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 1,188 teams.
"Our coaches and student-athlete support staff have created a culture where academic excellence is expected," said Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee said. "We are grateful to work with student-athletes who are not only gifted in their sport, but academically focused and motivated."
The 1,284 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 827 women's teams and 457 men's or mixed squads.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "To have nine national champions so far this year — including men's and women's basketball — be among those recognized illustrates that student-athletes succeed athletically and academically."
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17 academic years.
A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000, while a 930 (50 percent rate) marks the threshold for which the NCAA can impose sanctions on athletic programs. Full APRs for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released May 23.
A total of 88 Division I programs received public recognition in women's volleyball, including EMU, Kent State, and Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference. EMU joined Bowling Green as the league's men's cross country recipients.
The MAC had a total of 30 programs recognized Wednesday, while a total of 23 Division I athletic teams from the state of Michigan earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA.
In the 13 years since APR Public Recognition Awards have been handed out, Eastern Michigan has been honored 21 times in nine different sports.
