Eagles Fall Short in Series Finale at KSU

Sophomore Zachary Owings extended his on-base streak to 27 games
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team kept the game close, but could not break through in a 6-4 defeat in the series finale at Kent State University, Sunday afternoon, May 13, at Schoonover Stadium.
EMU (20-30, 12-12 MAC) had two four-run deficits throughout the game, and got it to within two twice, but could not get enough firepower to tie or take the lead in the end.
The Eagles tallied six hits on the day, led by a two-hit, two-RBI day from freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview). Sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) extended his on-base streak to 27 games with an RBI single as well.
On the hill, freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) made his first appearance in conference play this season, and excelled going two scoreless with just one hit allowed. After McGuire, senior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)) tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout to make it two-straight scoreless appearances for the veteran.
The first two innings went by quickly without much offensive action, but that changed in the third as Kent State used four walks and a double to plate four runs and take a lead into the fourth.
Following a scoreless fourth, EMU got on the board in the top of the fifth. Nate Jones delivered a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded to cut the deficit in half, 4-2, at the midway point. Kent State got the two runs back immediately in the bottom of the fifth, however, making it a 6-2 contest into the sixth.
Coming on from the pen for the first time in conference action, McGuire cruised through scoreless sixth and seventh innings to keep it a four-run game into the eighth. There, EMU pulled within two once again with two runs on three walks and a hit. The inning started with two walks, and Owings singled in the first on a single to right, making it 6-3.
After another walk loaded up the bases, and Nick Jones drove in the fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right, cutting the deficit to just 6-4 with one more turn at the plate. EMU would not get any closer though, as they couldn't get a runner on in the ninth to wrap up game, falling just short.
EMU returns home this midweek for its final non-conference game of the season, Tuesday, May 15, against Butler University. First pitch against the Bulldogs at Oestrike Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
