YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Eastern Michigan University baseball student-athletes Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) and Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Baseball Team in District Five by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Thursday, May 10. The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The fifth district is the geographical region of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, and is comprised of 11 players. To be eligible for Academic All-District® consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have reached sophomore standing.

DeVenney and Owings are one of just two pairs of teammates to be honored in District 5, joining Michigan State University's Dan Chmielewski and Zack McGuire. In addition, they make up two of the three Mid-American Conference players honored, joining Kent State University's Mason Mamarella.

The duo are the 10th and 11th players in program history to earn Academic-All District honors, and the first since Brennan Williams in 2016. The two now advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June.

DeVenney has had splendid final season in the Green and White as EMU's top pitcher, as well as a two-way threat in the outfield. The righty leads EMU with a 2.61 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched, including 46 strikeouts and a 6-1 overall record. His ERA ranks third in the conference and 103rd in the nation, while his innings pitched are fourth-most in the MAC. In addition, his MAC-only ERA of 1.67 ranks second. He has started as part of the weekend rotation 12 times, and in all 12 starts he has yet to give up more than three earned runs.

He has also done work patrolling the outfield and with the bat, as he has started 15 games in the field, while appearing in 26 games overall. In 56 at bats, the Iowa native has 13 hits, including two home runs, nine RBIs, and 10 runs scored. He has also drawn eight walks, and stolen three bases. DeVenney graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.85 GPA in April with his degree in finance.

Owings has been one of EMU's top bats in his sophomore season, as he currently leads the team in batting, slugging, and on-base percentages, while also ranking second in hits, doubles, home runs, runs scored, steals, and total bases. He has had two-separate 10-game hitting streaks, as well as a 24-game reached base streak, while also owning a hit in 31-of-39 games on the year.

In the MAC, Owings ranks third in batting average, fourth in steals, and eighth in slugging. His batting average is also 125th nationally, while his slugging ranks within the top 250. The Saline, Mich. Native currently owns a 3.84 GPA as a business management major.

DeVenney, Owings, and the rest of the Eagles baseball team return to action tomorrow, May 11, for the opening game of a three-game set at MAC-leading Kent State. First pitch against the Golden Flashes is set for 4 p.m.
