ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team led for the first seven innings before a late rally wound up being the difference in a crushing 6-4 defeat to the University of Michigan Tuesday evening, May 1, at Ray Fisher Stadium.

The Eagles (16-25), grabbed a lead in the second inning and did not relent until a four-run frame from the Wolverines (26-13) in the eighth.

EMU received a solid start from freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) who took a no decision after going the first five innings, allowing only two runs on two hits with five strikeouts. In relief, fellow freshman Dillon Schroeder (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford Senior) tossed two scoreless frames to maintain the lead late in the game.

Offensively, EMU tied UM in hits, 8-8, but couldn't get enough of the clutch hits it needed, stranding nine runners on base. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a two-hit day, including an RBI double. Junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) also had an RBI double, on top of drawing a walk and scoring a run.

After a scoreless first frame, EMU opened up the scoring in the second with a bases loaded hit by pitch from redshirt junior Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley), his first RBI of the season, to make it 1-0. EMU couldn't capitalize any further, however, as a double play ended the threat.

The EMU offense continued to hit the ball around in the third, as runners got to first and third with no outs following a hit and error. Eastern scored its first run on a junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) single, which was immediately followed by an RBI double from Rensel, putting the Eagles up 3-0 in the third.

Michigan broke through in the bottom of the third, getting a run across on a ground out, but EMU limited the damage to keep the lead into the fourth. Eastern got the lead back up to three in the top of the fourth after Nate Jones doubled in Wolanski, who led off the inning with a double of his own.

On the bump, McGuire got through the fourth and fifth innings unscathed to maintain EMU's steady lead into the sixth inning. Michigan got back to within two in the sixth, plating a run on an infield single, tightening the score to 4-2 into the final three frames.

In the bottom of the seventh, Michigan got runners to second and third with two outs, but Schroeder was able to get a harmless fly out to maintain the two-run lead. EMU had a similar opportunity in the top of the eighth, loaded the bags up with two outs, but this time UM escaped the jam to keep it tight.

The game unraveled in the bottom of the eighth as Michigan loaded the bases with no outs, and cleared them on a triple, giving the Wolverines their first lead of the game. Another run came across later on a sacrifice fly, making it a 6-4 UM lead into the ninth. EMU then went 1-2-3 in the ninth to seal the two-run defeat.

EMU and UM get right back into action with the return trip of the home-and-home series tomorrow, May 2, at Oestrike Stadium. First pitch between the Washtenaw County rivals is set for 6 p.m.
